Virtual Reality with the Google Explorations App

How have the largest web search engines approached the evolution in the VR and AR world?

It is given that Virtual Reality has been, since its inception, a technology that seeks the best utility for learning. The user has finally arrived in a virtual world where useful teaching information is provided: this has made this type of technology, the ideal evolution of the e-learning concept and a powerful new training tool. That is why the world’s largest search engine has also patented a “schooling” app so that it can take students into the magical virtual world of awe and school acquisition.

Here's what you'll find in this article

Google for Education

Google Explorations is a digital tool specifically made to make education more innovative and engaging through immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tours. Students can finally “immerse” themselves in places, environments, phenomena and works discussed in the classroom, with the supervision of the teacher, who selects virtual experiences and guides them step by step.

The Google for Education team is committed to supporting teaching and learning anywhere, anytime, and on any device. Over the past 5 years, we are proud to have made immersive VR and AR learning experiences possible for millions of students around the world with Google Explorations and Tour Creator.

As schools around the world reimagine education from the ground up for a hybrid approach, we too have been thinking carefully about how to optimize our tools to fit the present while making them fit for the future. We have heard and noted that immersive experiences via VR viewers are not always accessible to all students, especially this year during which the transition to blended teaching has made it more difficult to effectively use explorations in school.

How does it work?

To make VR tours of Explorations available to all, we are migrating most of them to the free Google Arts & Culture site and app. A large collection of cultural artifacts and stories from around the world will also be available here for everyone to continue exploring. With the expansion of Arts & Culture, however, the Google Explorations app will no longer be available for download and Tour Creator will no longer be accessible as of June 30, 2021. With the Explorations app, classrooms no longer have boundaries! With virtual and augmented reality, teachers are no longer confined to the space of a classroom: while the former allows them to explore the world virtually, the latter brings abstract concepts to life. Teachers can then serve as “guides” to students through collections of 360-degree scenes and 3D objects, pointing out sites and items of interest along the way, the setup is minimal and maximum engagement, the experiences are unique and hands-on, and there are hundreds of adventures for the class.

For more information, you can consult the Explorations Help Center.

“The most frequent comment from students was that it was the best experience ever for them; even the teachers were of the same opinion. Everyone was amazed at the things they could do and the places they could explore.”
